ANOTHER RECIPE!!! and an update on Molly

I can't believe it, this is the third recipe in as many days, I seem to be on a roll!!

Ramen noodle casserole

INGREDIENTS

Two 85 g (3 oz) packages instant ramen noodles, unopened
8 oz (225 g) lean ground beef
1 cup tomato sauce
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
2 tbsp ketchup
1/2 tsp each: garlic or onion salt, dried oregano
2-1/4 cups vegetable or chicken stock
1/2 cup frozen corn kernels

Directions:

Use mug or rolling pin to gently hit unopened bags of noodles to break noodles into clumps. Open bags; discard flavour packets.  I took a photo of the noodles just in case you don't have the same brand as ours.  In Britain they are the same noodles you find in the "pot noodles."  Each packet is 85 grams.  I use the flavour packets in my recipe.

Place beef in microwave-safe dish. Heat at 50 per cent power 3 minutes until mostly cooked. Use back of spoon to break into small clumps.

Spoon beef into medium bowl; discard juices.

To bowl of meat, mix in tomato sauce, 1/2 cup cheese, ketchup, garlic or onion salt and oregano. Gradually stir in stock, then noodles and corn.

Pour into 8-inch square baking dish. Poke down any big noodle pieces sticking out. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup cheese on top.

Bake, uncovered, in preheated 425F oven, 25 minutes or until edges are bubbly and top noddles are browned.

I originally mentioned this recipe in this post So it's been a long while since I have made it.

On Wednesday afternoon the vet called me to tell me she had got the faxed report on Molly and her allergies.  Here are the main things she is allergic to:

Food
yeast
chicken
rice
oatmeal
fish
carrots

She was tested for 7 local grasses and she is allergic to 5 of them.
dust, dust mites, mold
Maple trees

When I get the actual report there will be more things, but these are the main ones.  So the next plan of action is, when she has finished her bag of food which I have just purchased (fish and sweet potato!) then we have to change her food AGAIN, and she has to be put on ATOPICA for the rest of her life.

Does anyone know where the cheapest place is to order them online with delivery in Canada?  Or do you know of a reputable online store that you have ordered pet medications from?  We probably won't be putting her on these pills until mid to end of March.  Meanwhile she will still be on Vanectyl P until then.  She can't stay on that medication forever as it is a steroid and its not good for her.  Also if we can get her off those pills she may be able to go for longer periods of time without having to be let outside to pee.  As the Vanectyl P makes them urinate more.

We have decided along with the vet, that her allergies are probably the reason she was given up, as the allergy medication is expensive.  Its such a shame if that's the case; and even we are going to find it hard to afford, but we will some how or other, as there is no way we are getting rid of her.

I have been doing a little cross stitch, stitching a towel, here is what I have done so far:

Did you put your money into your Daily Savings Pot today?

Today's Money Saving Tip:

Do you have a toaster oven?   If you don't have one, it may be a good thing to invest in.  I use mine on a regular basis instead of putting my main oven on.   The toaster oven heats up faster, saving money, and it doesn't use as much electricity when it is in use.  Just a thought?

Your noodle recipe looks good Gill.

Sorry to hear about Molly's problems. She is a lucky girl that you found her and that you will see that she gets the care she needs.

The cross stitch looks pretty and reminds me that I have one waiting to be started! I really must get on with it.

When we were having our kitchen refitted we bought a double oven so that we probably do have what you refer to as a toaster oven. We decided on it to do exactly what you recommend. Great minds! A x

Goodness, she certainly is allergic to lots of things isn't she?! Poor dear . . . I know "The Beast's" meds are cheaper online here in the UK rather than from the vet, but her specialized food was not :-(

Don't have a toaster oven, but do have a combi and use it often instead of the gas oven and wouldn't trade it!

Hi there Gill,

Your Molly sounds just like my mom's dog Rhea. She is allergic to a whole load of stuff too, but she doesn't have her on steroids or any other medication because she feeds her a raw diet. It's really the only way that you can know exactly what's going into the food. It's also definitely much cheaper in the long run than some of the bagged food that you might end up buying. Would you like me to put in contact with her? She has three dogs of her own right now and has been feeding them raw for years and years, she has all sorts of recipe books she can recommend for you and she can also recommend some natural remedies for Molly that could keep her off that super pricey medication.

Your recipe looks so good. Glad to hear you finally found out what Molly is allergic to. Hopefully the new food and meds will make a huge difference. Hugs

Buster has a lot of allergies as well. He is our 13 year old cairn terrier and terriers are known for allergies. Many of the meds for treating them long term can cause cataracts. Hope she is soon well. I hate to see animals and babies sick -- they can't tell us (in words) what's wrong.
I have a toaster oven and use it often.

Mmmmmm, I will have to give that recipe a try, Gill. I have many, many packages of Ramon noodles that need to be eaten ~ this sounds like a great way to do it!

Praying Molly's allergies will subside once and for all now that you know what to avoid...at least as much as you can. Some things she'll always be subjected to, but fewer has got to be better, right?!

Poor Molly! I hope someone can direct you to a reasonably priced website/company for that medication she's going to have to take. Great recipe - love Ramen Noodles - and your cross stitch looks lovely.

I feel so bad....chicken and rice are just what I recommended! AGH!! The poor thing! Well, I suppose if you opt for the generic of the med it'll be a bit cheaper.
