Gogo Grannies

The other day when I was at the garage sale there was a table that was being run by the Gogo Grannies of Orangeville.  I had no idea what they were all about and I talked to a lovely lady called Cathy who told me all about the organization.

The name gogo is Malawi’s Chichewan word for grandmother/grandfather, you will also find the same name in other African nations as well.   The Stephen Lewis Foundation launched a Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign to encourage awareness in Canada about the African Grandmothers struggle to raise children that had been orphaned by AIDS.  They also want to build solidarity among African and Canadian grandmothers in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

The money the Gogo Grannies of Orangeville raised from the garage sale was part of their fundraising for this cause.   This seems to be such a good cause and there are branches all around the country, and I am sure there must be similar organizations in other parts of the world.

You don't have to be a gogo dancer or a granny to join, just be willing to help others......
